This recent sculpture was created for a client of one of the galleries that represents me.  

The client was not sure of the pose she wanted so I presented several drawings for 

her to choose from.

I loved working with the Roadrunner as a subject.  There are so any species that I 

want to add to my portfolio that pleasing someone with a drawing before actualizing 

the sculpture is a great tool of the trade.  There are over 10,000 species of birds 

alone . . . I’m afraid I won’t get to all of them!

#546 Beyond my studio window: geese

We had two pair of Canada Geese nest and raise their broods on our pond this spring.
The pond outlet flows into the Popo Agie River which surrounds the property and the wild
geese have taken the maturing juveniles downstream to prepare them for flight and migration.
Below, are photos taken this spring of the wild geese.

Below, is a working drawing of an idea for future consideration in the design studio.
Contemplating, experiencing, and observing birds in nature is the best . . .
and for me the only way to create sculpture.

Below, is a drawing of a big Canada stretching it's wings.

We have 4 enormous domestic French geese who hatched goslings over the 4th of July week-end.

We not only enjoy their majestic beauty as they glide on our pond but they also serve as an
effective alert system - similar to watchdogs - with their raucous honking
when anything out of the ordinary invades their territory.

Below, the brood's first outing on the pond.

The domestic goslings are a daily delight and this is only the second time in six years that they've had their eggs hatch . . . so many predators in our remote and untamed area!  The pond, with it's little island sanctuary provided safety
for both the wild and the domestic geese and the birds were able to protect their clutch.
Domestic geese are built different than wild geese and because their weight and center of gravity
is set so far back compared to wild geese,  the domestics are flightless.

Below, is a painting of a gosling with one of my sculptures.  It was painted by Adele Earnshaw,
one of my all-time favorite artists whose work I collect and whose friendship I enjoy.

#502 Museum Shows: The Briscoe . . . "Briscoe Bison Fragment I"

Our next major show is the Briscoe Museum's "Night of the Artists".  Located on San Antonio's famed River Walk, the institution is housed in San Antonio's first public library.  The newly restored Art Deco masterpiece consists of the historic museum building,  the newly constructed Jack Guenther Pavillion, the adjacent McNutt Courtyard and Sculpture Garden and is spread across one-and-a-quarter acres in downtown San Antonio.

Invitational and juried museum shows such as the Briscoe and the Autry Museum's Masters of the American West - now in progress -  have played an important role in the resurgent interest in representational art.  Quality, originality and healthy competition among the artists has been the result and astute collectors and museums recognize it.

The prestigious shows are coveted invitations and I always introduce new and current work at the important events.  

The Briscoe "Night of the Artists" opens Fri., March 28 with a gala opening event.
Public exhibition open March 30 and continues through April 27.

#499 Museum Shows: The Autry, con't . . . "King of the Coop"

One of America's most important Western art show, the Masters of the American West Fine Art Exhibition and Sale, 

celebrates its 17th anniversary at the Autry National Center with opening-day activities on Saturday, February 1, 2014. The juried exhibition and sale features 82 artists, including a newly added guest artist group of emerging talent, whose work is stylistically and thematically diverse.

#491 In the field: Africa . . . Elephant

Please start this series of posts with #477

Over the years I've created a few etchings and sculptures from zoo reference.  No zoo experience,
however, can equal the first-hand knowledge gained by observing an animal in its natural habitat.
I am now working on an African portfolio and have discovered that my recent trip to
Tanzania is the motivation and driving force for understood creativity in the studio.          

There are approximately 40 zoos in North America that accommodate the African Elephant
and below, is a sculpture modeled from drawings and photographs made at the San Diego Zoo.

#467 In the field: Yellowstone, con't . . .

While in Yellowstone recently, we saw many different animal species including the Grizzly.

Years ago,  it was fairly uncommon to see them . . . but we see them almost every visit now. 

We live less than three hours southeast of the park and griz are routinely seen now in places we hike and fish.
We're very cautious in these areas, hike with a bell and bear spray, and there are some places close to home that we simply don't venture into now . . .  Grizzly continue to move into our section of the Wind River Range south of Yellowstone.

Below, while on our recent Yellowstone field trip,  I took this shot in the Hayden Valley as we spotted a griz  foraging and crossing a distant meadow.  We moved on as he appeared to be moving our way.

The  Grizzly is one of my favorite subjects and I've experienced the bear not only in Yellowstone,
but on the many trips I've taken to Alaska over the years.

Below, are images of  Grizzly I photographed thirty three years ago on my first trip to Alaska.  

I was on Kodiak Island - where the griz is known as the Brown Bear -  and back then,
I used a Pentax 35 mm, and shot a lot of black and white.

Like most artists, I've always used the camera in conjunction with my sketchbook.

During the '70s, my primary interest was etching and original printmaking.

#462 Western Visions 26th year: Works shown and sold.

Western Visions is the longest running art show at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming.  

More then 150 painters and sculptors were invited to participate in the show 

which opened to the public on September, 13 and will close on September, 22.

Below, are the four works I presented at this year's exhibition.
