#313 At the museum: National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum

Persimmon Hill magazine is the National Cowboy Western and Heritage Museum's award-winning journal on the West.

The magazine premiered in 1970, an occasion that also marked the fifth anniversary of the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. Persimmon Hill has been published continuously as the museum's flagship publication.  

Below, is a recent article in the magazine about my sculpture demonstration at the museum in June.  I have taught bird anatomy, sculpture and design workshops for over 25 years and have demonstrated my method many times.  Typically, the clay model is dismantled and the clay is used another day.  

Occasionally, I consider a demo "worthy" of completion and casting . . .  
such is the case with the Prix de West block-in of the Western Screech Owl. I will continue to live with the unfinished work until next year's deadline looms . . . at that time, I will strive to retain freshness and spontaneity  as I finish the piece for the prestigious 2013 Prix de West Exhibition.

#274 In the studio: "Moose Flats"

Moose Flats was created 13 years ago, the maquette quickly sold out.
Several years ago Joy and Tony Greene commissioned the sculpture to be enlarged into a monument for the new Sculpture Trail at the National Museum of Wildlife Art
located in Jackson, Wyoming.  See posts #260-263, June 17-20, 2012.

Shown below, is a picture of the maquette published in the
July issue of Western Art Collector.  

The size printed is the size of the monument.

#263 National Museum of Wildlife Art: "Sculpture Trail", con't . . .

Last Thursday, the NMWA in Jackson, Wyoming unveiled and dedicated the Presidential Eagle. The event marked the opening of the new Sculpture Trail, see
posts # 260, 261 and 262.

No trip to Jackson and the Tetons is complete without spending time in the beautiful and wildlife-rich outdoors, photographing and sketching birds.

#185 In the field: Everett Raymond Kinstler: "Pulps to Portraits"

Last weekend Trish and I took a whirlwind trip to the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA to attend a retrospective exhibition tracing the seven decade journey
of one of the most prominent artists of our time: Everett Raymond Kinstler.

Ray began his career as a comic book artist and illustrator and evolved into a distinguished portrait painter of seven United States presidents, celebrities and other notable figures.  He is a giant in the art world, an American treasure and I am delighted to know Ray and his lovely wife Peggy as friends.

I've known Ray and Peggy for years.  I worked with Peggy when she was editor
of Informart Magazine and knew Ray from mutual participation in museum shows
such as Prix de West in Oklahoma City.  He sponsored my membership into the
National Arts Club in New York City and we own each others art.

At right and below, I'm with Peggy and Ray at the gala opening.

I was delighted when Southwest Art magazine published a feature article spotlighting my sculpture last year and chose Sleepy Fox for the cover.  It is my second cover for the magazine, the first featured one of my etchings in 1978.
