# 678 "Wild 100" at the National Museum of Wildlife Art

Note: We are now posting once a week on Monday.

Trish and I just returned from the opening of "Wild 100" art show and sale at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming.  I exhibited two new sculptures in the show:  Shown below is "Tom" (Wild Turkey) and "M'Bogo" . . .  which is the Swahili word for African Buffalo.  I also exhibited one etching - "Bull Moose".

We drove over Togwotee Pass in a snowstorm last Thursday and returned with beautiful, clear fall weather.
Mid-September is always glorious in the Tetons and Jackson Hole.
Below, are images and memories of this year's return to the "Wild 100".

Below, my work for the exhibition was spotlighted in the museum's magazine:  "Western Visions"/

Below, are images of my sculpture on the museum's sculpture trail.

Below, a group gathered at the museum to celebrate Jane Smith: Jane and Red were great friends of Carl Rungius and Jane was a patron of the museum.  We all toasted their incredible lives with Jane, Red, and Carl's favorite drink . . . a Manhattan!  Pictured are Sue Simpson Gallagher and Bill Kerr;  Veerla and Kent Ullberg with Joffa Kerr;  and yours truly.

A highlight of the weekend was spending time with Debbie Petersen . . .  the delightful and art impassioned
chairman of the National Museum of Wildlife Board of Trustees.

# 677 "Quest for the West" at the Eiteljorg Museum, con't . . .

Please see the previous post for more information about this blog.

Trish and I just returned from the Eiteljorg Museum's 10th anniversary of
"Quest for the West" in Indianapolis, Indiana.  We enjoyed the exciting art-filled event with fellow artists, collectors, and museum folks!

For information about the Eiteljorg Museum, please go to the link below.

Below, are images, comments, memories, and souvenirs from this year's "Quest for the West".

Below, is an image of the Ken Bunn Fountain in front of the museum.

Our hotel was directly across from the museum.  We enjoyed the view from our window of beautiful Indianapolis.

Below, Trish is with dear friend and fellow artist, Robert Griffing and Adam Smith; son of Dan Smith and a fine painter.  Also shown, is George Carlson's dramatic sculpture at the museum entrance.

Shown below, is Logan Maxwell Hagege, winner of this years's museum purchase award, and Tony and Brenda Eubanks.
At far right is long-time friend, Wayne Rumley who was honored as this year's Collector of Distinction.

Shown below, is Wayne Rumley with Jack and Valarie Guenther; founders of the Briscoe Museum
and Seth Hopkins; founder of the Booth Museum.

Shown below, I'm with fellow sculptor and friend, Doug Hyde and Joe Osborne.  Joe and his wife Gita
are sponsors and principles of the museum and held an open house at their gracious home.

Shown below, are images of the annual catalogue signing by the artists.

Below, I had time to catch up with old friend, Curt Walters as Curt Mattson was slow as molasses, signing his name!

A wildly popular new event was the artist small works art swap:  Each artist's name was pulled out of a hat
that corresponded with the name of one of the artworks shown below.

Below, is my swap bronze - "Bushytail" . . . included is Dan Smith's fox painting.
The fox was on my shortlist of work I hoped to be drawn for and I won!

Below, are 3 more paintings on my shortlist by Robert Griffing, Logan Hagege, and George Hallmark.
All of the art was outstanding and my shortlist was not so short!

Below, is the fox painting by Dan Smith that I won . . . no one paints snow like Dan and I love the painting!

Below, I'm with James Nottage; Vice President, Chief Curatorial Officer and Gund Curator of Western Art.

Shown below are Curt Walters, Trish, Tom Dailey, Joe Sylvan, and Steve Zimmerman;
Steve and Gita Osborne co-chaired this year's Quest for the West.

#675 Functional Art . . . bookends, con't

The serviceable function of a piece of sculpture is a time-honored and significant aspect of a sculptor's work.
Over the years, functional art such as bookends, fountains, sundials, hooks, door knockers and more
have been an important part of my portfolio and I especially enjoy designing bookends.

The figure emerging from mass has long been a favorite artistic theme and I have found that functional art such
as bookend design lends itself to this idea.  This blog depicts 4 of the many bookend designs I've created.

Below, is a design entitled
"Golden Retriever Bookends"

Below, is one of my personal favorite bookend creations depicting a pelican.

Below, is a work entitled, "Teton Tribute Bookends" which depicts moose, bison, elk, grizzly, and pronghorn.

My bookend designs require the suggestion of patterns and I reduce the subject to simple shapes and elements.
Even with a sculpture as complicated as "Teton Tribute",  detail can be reduced by squinting, designing with strong,
simple shapes and eliminating what's not important . . . detail.  Clarity is a must when presenting a  figure emerging
from the functional back of a bookend and I avoid unnecessary negative shapes and undercuts. . . mass is the goal.

I strive to make the figure or species recognizable from the silhouette by modeling simple, clear, and unified shapes.
I squint to make the strong shapes dominate.  Less is more and I don't weaken the design with unimportant detail.

Below,  "Quail Bookends" are an early design created in 1987 and will be included in my upcoming Retrospective.

#674 Functional Art . . . "African Elephant Bookends"

Over the years I've created many bookend compositions - over 30 at last count - and most of the designs
present the subject emerging from mass.   My most recent creation, "African Elephant Bookends",
is one of my favorite sculptures of functional art.  The work was created in one sitting - 2 to 4 hours - and my intent was to model a spontaneous, loose, and inspired surface while maintaining the general impression, size and shape of the animal.
I will discuss the merits and faults of one-sitting clay sketches and loose modeling in an upcoming blog.

Below, are images of the clay model of "African Elephant Bookends" in progress.

I modeled only one bookend but cast it twice to create the pair . . . below, is an image of the bronze casting of
"African Elephant Bookends".  Not all one-sitting sculptures are worthy of casting but this one was.
